I’ve only been in Valencia for two weeks, so I can only offer a mere sprinkling of knowledge, but I already feel at home and can’t imagine living anywhere else.
Our decision to move from Cairo to Valencia was fuelled by a desire for a slower pace of life, access to green spaces, and a strong sense of community. After plenty of research, it became clear that Valencia ticked all the boxes—a city with rich history, beautiful architecture, and a lifestyle that perfectly blends modernity with tradition. Now that I’m here, I’m realising just how much this city has to offer.
Ten Lessons I’ve Learned in Valencia
1. Celebrate all of the festivities
No matter how small or large, Valencia knows how to throw a celebration. From the world-famous Las Fallas, where intricate paper-mâché sculptures are set ablaze and street parties last for days, to smaller neighbourhood festivals, there’s always something happening. Valencians embrace their unique, local traditions with enthusiasm, and joining in makes you feel like part of the community.
2. Remember tradition
History is woven into everyday life here. One of the most fascinating traditions is the Tribunal de las Aguas. Every Thursday at noon, this ancient water court gathers outside the Cathedral to settle irrigation disputes—a practice that dates back over 1,000 years and is still legally binding today. Valencia’s respect for its past makes the city feel deeply rooted in its history and authentic.
3. Green is important
Valencia was voted Europe’s Green Capital in 2024, and it’s easy to see why. The city has countless parks, tree-lined streets, and a strong focus on sustainability. The massive Turia Gardens, which runs through the city like a green artery, is a perfect example of how Valencia prioritises nature within urban spaces.
4. Migration is positive
Valencia has long been a welcoming place for expats and migrants. Whether you're from another part of Spain or the other side of the world, there's a sense of inclusion. People from diverse backgrounds call this city home, making it a melting pot of cultures, cuisines, and ideas.
5. Sunshine is key to happiness
Valencia enjoys around 300 days of sunshine per year, and I can already feel the difference it makes. The bright, blue skies and mild temperatures mean people spend more time outdoors, leading to a more active and cheerful lifestyle.
6. Pedestrian-friendly spaces are amazing
This city is designed for walking and cycling. With endless cycle lanes, wide pedestrian paths, and car-free zones, getting around feels effortless. You’re never far from a park, plaza, or charming street where people stroll and socialise, making daily life feel relaxed and enjoyable.
7. Embrace the future
While Valencia is steeped in history, it’s also a city of innovation. The City of Arts and Sciences is a striking example of its forward-thinking spirit, blending futuristic architecture with cultural institutions. The city’s growing focus on technology and sustainability makes it an exciting place to live.
8. Third spaces matter
One of my favourite discoveries has been the abundance of ‘third spaces’ — places outside of home and work where people gather. Parks, plazas, and, of course, the beaches provide endless opportunities to relax, meet friends, and engage in social life without spending a cent. The city encourages community interaction in the most natural way.
9. Art inspires art
Valencia’s art scene is vibrant and accessible. Whether it’s the modern masterpieces in the IVAM, the historical works in the Museo de Bellas Artes, or the endless street art scattered throughout the neighbourhoods, creativity is everywhere.
10. Fresh organic food makes living easy
With abundant local markets offering fresh, organic produce, it’s incredibly easy to maintain a healthy diet here. Seasonal fruits, locally grown vegetables, and fresh seafood are staples of Valencian cuisine.
Final Thoughts
Two weeks in, and I already feel like Valencia has welcomed me with open arms. The city’s blend of tradition and modernity, its commitment to green living, and its happy atmosphere make it a truly special place to call home. I can’t wait to continue exploring and learning more about this incredible city.
We love it too and look forward to many more future visits.
